Explanatory Answer

 

We can summarize the information given in the question as per the above Venn diagram.
We can conclude that: 

a + c = 5
b + c = 7
Hence, b – a = 2
We have to minimize a + b.
Assuming if a = 0
Then b = 2 & c = 5
Therefore, number of students choosing Chemistry as one subject = 18 + 2 = 20
